OK, ok, folks- A phenomenon that I feel is worth mentioning. I just
finished a little experiment, and downloaded an uncompressed .wrl from
lightscape. It was about 9 MB. It took ages, and this was an a T1. I
then got my brother to download the same model via Compuserve's Internet
access on a 14.4k modem, and it was almost BLINDINGLY quick- I am talking
about 4 hours on the T1, and 50 MINUTES on the 14.4. I think to a little wonder knows as LAPM. As far as I know, this is a compression
protocol built into modems, which involves the use of a compression
'dictionary'. On text files, where similar letters are frequently used, a
position marker is set and the letter transmitted once, not x-thousand
times. So, when downloading a complex .wrl, which has MILLIONS of often
repeated words and phrases, the cunning modems negotiated with each other
to only send each bit once! Why can that be built into a vrtp 'virtual
reality transfer protocol'?
