I suggest we stick with the gzip method. I have seen people already gzip their
VRML files and put them up for downloading. Without changing a single
mime.type or mailcap entry I was able to use NetScape to download, g-unzip and
view the files (although my viewer gagged on some residual OpenInventor tags).
The issue of a binary format may cloud up the specification process and take
away from more pressing topics such as viewer translation, interactivity
characteristics, and also extensions to the spec. At some later time we may
want to revisit this topic when the spec is nailed down. I feel a binary mode
for VRML at this time will also hinder tool and viewer development. I
personally like to read the files to get a feel for the spec and how the nodes
interact, I don't think using an editor on a binary file would give me the
same warm fuzzy feeling :-).
