Something has been missing from all the talk about gridded data
formats. There are a bunch of data formats already (probably too
many). If we start going outside of plain old graphics performance
considerations, any specialized format ought not reinvent previous efforts.

sci.data.formats is the usenet newsgroup on this subject. It has been a
while since I took a hard look at it so any folks active in that
community please feel free to speak up. As I recall, the Spatial Data
Transfer Standard is a GIS-based consortium is trying to resolve many
similar data formats. Perhaps there is a close fit in there
somewhere. Incidentally this is a ripe area for file converters.
