To date, the best orienting device i know of is being developed by Randy
Pausch (http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~pausch). He uses a model called WIM,
or world in miniature. This is an overlaid transparent mini world
callable from the keyboard or whatever input device. Inside the WIM is a
Doll. You can spin the doll around and see the world change orientation.
If you like what you see, you fly into the doll's eyes. Everything is
time based. Teleporting reduces immersion seeing as we are temporal
subjects. The smooth transition into the doll's FOV is very clean, and
now the WIM is gone and hopefully you are reoriented and once again fully
immersed.
Pausch works closely with a perceptual psychologist. His work on a
rapid world development tool is stunning. Look for ALICE sometime next
year.
