Actually,
You can goto Control Panel/Joystick and select (none) for the joystick to
disable it. If that cures the spinning, go back to Control Panel/Joystick
and reselect your joystick, then calibrate it.

Robert,
Re: spinning around helplessly -- I believe that it's caused by joystick
drift. Just for grins, try unplugging your joystick, then run VE. If that
cures the spinning, plug the stick back in and run the joystick calibration
routine in Settings/Control Panel.
I'll put an automatic test for joystick calibration and drift in the next
beta.
