is there some texture classificator?

Hello VRMLers,
I'm new to this list. Hope you'll be tolerant to my mistakes.

Has anyone heard about an attempt to make a texture classificator? I mean
a program which would compare files and recognize if there are two same
textures with different names. Thus, if I alesady have these files, I
wouldn't need to waste time downloading them again.
