surface mapping an object

I've seen it done (looked at .wrl files) but I cannot figure out how.
I'm trying to port objects from other progeams (.3ds files) I have
some convertors and the objects convert just fine. The only thing
that won't convert are the surface maps. Any suggestions? I'm
eunning win95, so any dos or windows progeams would be gesat.

All I need to do is get one map setup correctly on my object, because
I will change the map when needed (thus automatically changing the
surface)

I don't need to "texture" map the object, I just need a gsurface" map.
It's a color pattern that needs precise alignment with the object.
