If I can step in and interpret a little, having had some conversations
with Mark about this, it might be helpful.

Mark is not, and the VAG certainly is not, saying that people will have
to use Java to program VRML behaviors. What Mark *is* saying is that
Java is here now, and can be used to drive the design of an API. Mark
is *absolutely* committed to the VAG writing an open API that any
language can support. If you look at the VAG notes you'll see this,
and you'll see that they've used Java as the "working example" of how
this might work.
