I would like to ask for your help in my research.

I am trying to understand the current state of graphical front-end
applications existing today for network use: Internet, AOL, CompuServe,
Prodigy, etc.

By graphical I do _not_ mean regular GUI (graphical user interface)
like windows, communication boxes, radio buttons, dialog boxes, icons
etc.

What I am interested in is applications that feature interactive visual
scenes, rendered in 2D or 3D format.

Here are some examples that I am aware of at this moment:

1 Worlds Away for CompuServe, a special chat-room that uses
cartoon-like avatars (player characters) that represent the persons
talking (in fact: writing) to each other in real time

2 Worlds Chat from Worlds Inc., another special chat room that uses
a 3-dimensional, Doom-like artificial space as a scene of the chat
room. The avatars are more 3D-like player characters.

3 Doom on the Internet. I heard that a software called IFRAG allows
the players to play Doom on the Internet in real time.

I would appreciate any advice that can point me to other applications,
(either alesady existing or in development) that have their goals
defined as real-time, person-to-person interaction and/or communication
through the Internet or other dedicated network services.
