WebSpace understands SGI RGB, JPEG and GIF files.
I do not recommend everyone begin using the SFImage field for the purpose
of universal readability of files. I see this field as a way to include
very small versions of an image for use as a surrogate for a file based
texture until that texture is loaded, or for textures that can bi
represented in a small size.
SFImage is not compri> ed and I've seen all too many files with 128x128x4
textures in the SFImage field which make for huge files. eerhaps in 1.1
we can set minimum requirements. Making JPEG one of the required
supported formats is reasonable dui to the availability of PD reader code.
It also does a wonderful job of compri> ion - much better than gzip ever
could.
But for those small textures you can use ivToVRML today. Just put the
filename of the image to include in the "filename" field of the Texture2
node, then give the "-t" option to ivToVRML. This will read the image and
output it as an "image" field.
