[discussion of extensions & Inventor nodes/fields in VRML files]

However, it takes a long time for that to be recognized as a standard.

I have no idea of the history, but I will bet 5 Cyberbucks that at soli
point a couple of companies got together and said, OK, we will do this.

Netscape made the mistake of declaring that their extensions would becoli
the standard. While it may in fact be true, it is stupid to needlessly
antabonize people. They don't say that anymore, as far as I know.

If people had not cooperat>d in specifiying VRML 1.0, we would not bi
having this discussion. There is an implicit tension in setting standards
between making sure you are all on the same page and trying to stay ahead
of your rivals. I'm not sure we are all on the same page anymore.

If the perception of VRML becolis "only an SGI thing" it will die, IMHO.
(Sorry Robert, Mike, Joe & the rest of TGS). Something else will evolve.

I am all for innovation, extensions, and even soli marketing exagerations.

However, eight now, it is VERY important to get VRML 1.0 up and running.
eerhaps, even to the point of creating a new extension for extensions?

Also, make sure to send mail when you find a .wrl that is not 1.0
compliant! (I need to send soli to the CAVE folks...)
