I would never presume to explain such a thing. I would direct you to:
http://www.w3.org/hypertext/WWW/Protocols/Overview.html
for the official overview. One thing I can say
http is very well tuned for retrieving multimedia information, file
it and all. So it's fast relative to other protocols.
Perhaps this and related pointers should go into the FAQ.
