I am really glad to see someone else raising this issue...

example: wanting a "top of the page" logo for some experimantation with
audio on the Internet, I envisioned a sort of wierd "raw" speaker... for the
terminally curious, see

http://www.newcollege.edu/audiolab/

one element I needed to express the object was a hollow, truncated cone...
easy to express in PoV-Ray... when I began trying to envision how to express
the same fairly simple object in vrml... gack. no wonder people are already
talking about compression schemes and giant files are used to express fairly
simple scenes.

CSG is def a way to overcome some current problems of expressing complex
objects in readable and not-too-giant-size form in vrml...

let me put in a plug for the lowly torus here... how to express the parts of
a basic column w/out it? that poor, neglected creature...
