Thanks to everyone who replied,

I did actually get it sorted not long after the post, (we had a brainstorm..),

This sounds like a very good candidate for the FAQ.. I'm siure I'm not the first (or last)
with this one.....

So the mime.types file was to blame..... no .wrl info tut tut...

BTW : I'll post the URL out at the end of this month when the site goes live...
