... although I wonder how his cube got bigger when "stripped" <grin>

The major time cost for gnu zip (or PKZIP or any LZW variant)
compression is in the compressing (which is done only when the space
is created or changed), while the decompression will easily be fast
enough to make up the network transmission time (witness the success
of Stacker and similar products -- network transmission is magnitudes
slower than hard disk transfer), not to mention the impact on other
net users.
