Do all servers have the "multi" feature that CERN does? What I am getting
at is this would be an ideal application of content negotiation. The browser
says "hey, I want this image called "mandrille", do you have a JPEG version?
or a PNG " [personification of HTTP protocol is strictly fictional :-)]

See Setting up multiple formats in:
http://www.w3.org/hypertext/WWW/Graphics/Overview.html
They suggest servers dealing with the translation via cgi scripts?

GIF is still under a cloud.

Speaking of which, if I use the transparency in GIF, does that create a
texture
with alpha = 1.0 for those pixels?
