when you run inst, use the -r option (root directory). This will create the
hiarchy from there. It's kinda messy, you'll end up with a /var /tmp /usr
etc... but it works.
inst -r . -f .
(this sets the root and from directory to your current working directory)
the rest should be obvious. If not, read the man page on inst.
