This is a really good idea and it is why people are discussing URN
(names) and UR*, etc. - in the context of VRML 2.0

Is the local file URL well enough specified so it will work on UNIX,
DOS & Mac? Seems I've tripped over it.

There are powerful urges and forces to slip things in at the last moment.
Let's be real sure we have thought about all of the ramifications. Also,
for every change we make, we slip out the browser availability, right?
A VRML 1.1 has been mentioned for sound, other primitives, binary,
and such.

By the way, I'd want to disable the file not found dialog immediately.
