|This leads to interesting ideas, I hope. A natural one is
|some kind of genetic recombination of worlds, akin to genetic
|algorithms, for those of you familiar with those in AI.

I like it. Worlds (or rooms) that get the most traffic are selected,
a genetic crossover perfomed, with some random mutations. and
the offspring are added to the environment. Meanwhile the least
used are culled. Of course, evolution is sloooow, so don't
expect wonders overnight.
