Sponsored by
San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)

Symposium overview
==================

The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is evolving as a standard
format for browsing three-dimensional environments on the World Wide Web.
This symposium will discuss the future of the VRML standard and general
technical issues relating to web-based browsing of three-dimensional data.

The symposium will be held at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at
the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) December 13-15, 1995. The
three-day program will consist of one day of focused roundtable discussions,
two days of paper presentations, and a day and a half of vendor exhibits
in parallel with paper presentations.

Roundtable
==========

Wednesday, December 13 will be devoted to roundtable discussions. The
VRML roundtable will consist of small, tightly focused discussion groups
on topics such as (but not limited to)

* VRML research issues and future directions
* recommended extensions to the VRML standard
* implementation of VRML browsers
* applications of VRML

Participants will be invited to attend based on peer review of "white papers,"
submitted in advance, that describe their work in VRML-related areas.
Initial roundtable discussion topics will be extracted from the white papers,
but the group will have latitude to extend or change the topics as the
discussion evolves. During the afternoon of December 13, the roundtable
will split into several discussion groups, facilitating more focused
discussions on particular subtopics.

The afternoon of the second paper day, December 15, will be reserved
for reports from each discussion group.

Technical Papers
================

Thursday and Friday, December 14-15, will be devoted to presentation of
peer-reviewed original technical papers. Accepted papers will be published
in the symposium proceedings, which will be distributed to all attendees
at the symposium. Papers should cover research, development, case studies,
or interesting applications.

Exhibits
========

Space will be available for vendors to exhibit VRML-related products all
day Thursday, December 14, and the morning of Friday, December 15.
