This doesn't seem to match the information on SGI's Web page, which
indicates that they are going to be putting out betas for a whole
bunch of platforms (including Windows) imminently. Or are they simply
going to be providing pointers to other people?

>Shall I post the relevant press releases to the list?
Please; I don't think we should lavish *too* much attention on them,
but it's important for us to understand where this is all going. Or,
at least, mention when something big happens, with pointers to the
relevant URLs. (It's reasonable to simply send interested people off
to look at stuff themselves, I think.)
>Can we have several lists, one for tech, one for philosophy, one for design,
>etc?
Yes, I think the time has come. (Personally, I'm interested in all three
subjects, but it looks like some people aren't.) This should also help
us focus our discussions. It ought to help, provided we keep up the
cross-pollination between the lists (and it's hard to see how that could
fail to happen).
>Is it time to move to USENET? (I think it soon will be.)
*Sigh*; yeah, probably. I confess that I'm reluctant; I think it's
almost guaranteed to lower our S-to-N ratio and raise our volume a
lot. But with the publicity, it's probably going to happen whether
we like it or not, so we might as well do so in a measured way...
Although -- it's not out of the question to keep the mailing list and
the newsgroup separate. As VRML starts to hit, there might be some
value in having a newsgroup where people can shoot the shit and ask
the usual FAQs, but keep at least the actual language design process
here in the mailing list, where it's a little quieter. Worth thinking
about...
This should be thought about in the context of the previous question:
the newsgroup might be the best place for the philosophy or (even more
likely) the design discussions...
