A bit disconcerting to see such wild misinformation coming out of
sgi.com.
First, as has been repeatedly stated here, any scripting architecture
for VRML will build on the geometry + hyperlinking standard that has
been the focus of VRML 1.0. Second, everyone here already
understands the importance of building wide client support for VRML
1.0 before attempting to standardize scripting and behaviors. And
finally, I will certainly advocate a standard which is open to
multiple scripting languages.
Contrary to your visions of conspiracy, the Java language is a great
boon to the VRML effort. Previously, there were *no* suitable
scripting languages on the near horizon at all -- nothing
simultaneously object oriented, securely executable, freely available
for non-commercial uses yet commercially supported, widely portable,
interpretable yet efficient... Because of Java, we should have at
least one decent language to experiment with in the near future.
Eventually, other languages like Python may also evolve into viable
candidates.
