Web via modem

This may be silly of me but I was wondering if anyone knows of a program
that would allow me to view the web via modem. I am not thinking of the
pictures, I would just like a terminal for my pc that is able to show the
different fonts headers, list type, etc... I could just use lynx but I
find it extremly annoying after using Mosaic for awhile in a UW computer lab.
I find that sitting next to a row of students while using a computer is not
very pleasing. And I am annoyed, thought very interested, by the discusion on
this list of VR, seen as how I can't even get fonts and the pictures I
get even with a ethernet connection to my school's system are dog slow.
Anyway, If anyone knows of a program the information would be much
appreciated.
