There has been a lot of discussion about the future of the CERN httpd 3.0 for
which support and maintenance now is provided by W3C at MIT and INRIA. It is
correct that development was slowed down after the 3.0 came out - mainly due
to insufficient human resources.
W3C _will_ provide a reference server implementation which will be distributed
under W3C conditions. It is not yet clear how close it will be to the original
CERN server. The main reason being that the W3C Reference Library on which it
is based has changed significantly and that server technology has changed as
well. It will therefore take a substantial amount of work but we are the phase
of assigning resources to the project. The current time frame for such a
server has been scheduled for about 6 months from now - but of course this
could be improved by outside contributions!
