An excellent idea. I have done the same thing with texinfo, extending
it with macro definitions (really, just Fred's aliases) to form 'tim'.
It allows one to explicitly use tags that chosen for the particular
application domain being documented, and therefore preserve that
information, but allows formatters ignorant of that domain to still do
reasonable things when transforming the document to a fixed state (such
as Postscript).

One point to note: It is useful to have a standard tag, in the base
DTD, that fades away to nothing upon interpretation

This <ignoreThisMarkup>would be</ignoreThisMarkup> an example.

This allows creation of domain-specific aliases which are used purely
for informational purposes, and that should have no effect on the
formatting.
